Thinking, Fast and Slow

Updated: Mar 11, 2020

People respond to facts and information in very varied ways. Yet the thought processes can be largely categorised. Daniel Kahneman in his book Thinking Fast and Slow talks about some major thinking patterns that we observe in people.

Kahneman gives the example of a man whose son is killed by a lion. The man registers this fact and makes it a point to stay clear off lions. The next time his son dies after a bird flies overhead, the man again registers this fact and believes that the bird had a role to play in his son’s death. This is just one of the ways how some of the quick decisions we take can be completely irrational.

Another concept is that of priming which marketers use all the time. Companies brand their product in such a manner that you think of a very particular thing when you see the product. One of the reasons why it is common to find a cola drink in a party than an orange drink.
